The Paul Smith's College Visitor Interpretive Center features several ponds, streams, and trails, all open to the public. Black Pond has a trail that goes all the way around it.
Located on the property of the Paul Smith's College Visitor Interpretive Center, anglers will park on the road and enjoy a short walk or snowshoe to Black Pond, where the fishing is excellent.
Please note: Ice fishing is not allowed at Black Pond.
Logistics / Directions
- Located in Harrietstown
- Public parking is available 2.5 miles down Keese Mills Road near Paul Smith's College.
- Put in at the public parking area and walk the trail a short way to the pond.
Fish Species
Northern Pike, Yellow Perch, Pumpkinseed.
Reclaimed in 1997, this 73-acre pond is home to brook trout, a wild population augmented by stocking from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. The pond, connected to Lower St. Regis Lake, is 45 feet at its deepest and averages about 20 feet.
Black Pond contains native strain brook trout. Bait fishing is prohibited on these waters.
Water Type / Fishing Access
Ownership is private, but public is allowed.
There is a lean-to with a picnic table on the shore. No camping.
Don’t forget to investigate Little Black Pond, a small bay on the east side of the pond.
Paddling
It’s accessible by a hand boat launch at the end of Keese Mill Road, 2.5 miles west of the intersection of Keese Mill Road and NYS Route 30. There is room for five cars.
Accessibility
There is a handicapped accessible parking area with a path to a small dock.
