Damming this section of the Salmon River has created a spectacular tumble of water in stark contrast to the lake on the other side of the road. Great photo opportunity.

Take Duane Road past the Rec Center to Whippleville, and look for the small parking lot on the right, just before the bridge.

Do not approach the dam facility, or leave the parking lot. The grass and rocks can be slippery from the water spray.

There’s a small parking area next to the hydro facility where you can catch a limited glimpse of the falls, but much of the surrounding land, including the area along the road downstream, is clearly marked as private. From the edge, you can see just how steep the drop is—it’s a long way down.

How to get there

From Malone, head south towards Chasm Falls on CTY Route 25. You can find this waterfall shortly after turning onto the Fayette Road. There’s a small parking area next to a hydro facility where you can catch a limited glimpse of the falls, but much of the surrounding land, including the area along the road downstream, is clearly marked as private. From the edge, you can see just how steep the drop is—it’s a long way down.

The falls tumble over what looks like a single massive rock slab. The water flows at a steep angle, dropping roughly 50 feet before narrowing into a tight, flume-like gorge. From there, it weaves through a rocky path, bending into an “S” shape as it continues its descent.

After the parking area, the road curves sharply left and begins winding downhill. At the first bend, there’s a spot where you can catch a distant but decent look at the upper part of the falls. Farther down, just beyond the last section of guardrails, you might spot the lower portion through the trees. While these views are remote, they reveal how the river carves its way down through a long stretch of slides and natural rock steps.
