How to Get There

From Malone, take Route 30 south toward Paul Smiths and Lake Clear. In Lake Clear, turn onto Route 30 toward Tupper Lake and continue about 5.5 miles to Floodwood Road on the right. Follow Floodwood Road briefly, then turn onto Hoel Pond Road, continuing to a rough dirt access road that leads to the state boat launch. The final stretch passes a golf course before reaching the parking and carry-down site.

Camping

Hoel Pond offers primitive, backcountry-style camping in designated sites around the shoreline, mainly on the northeast and southwest sides. These sites are boat-access only and provide a quiet, remote Adirondack experience with minimal development. Campers should be prepared for self-sufficiency, as amenities are limited and conditions are rustic.

Fishing

Hoel Pond is a prime destination for anglers seeking landlocked salmon, especially when trolling deeper waters during summer. The pond reaches depths of about 65 feet, and fish often move down when temperatures rise. Anglers also find lake trout, largemouth and smallmouth bass, and panfish, making it a diverse fishery.

Fishing is best done from a boat launched at the southern shore. Ice fishing is not allowed, so all fishing takes place in open water season.

Paddling

Hoel Pond offers over 6 miles of shoreline for exploration, with motorboats allowed for shoreline owners but not for visitors launching at the state site. Paddlers can explore quiet coves and connections toward nearby waters, though the eastern shoreline is mostly private.

A key caution: a culvert outlet at the pond’s end is dangerous and not navigable, even though some kayaks may physically fit through it. It should be avoided entirely.

The launch is a short, steep 30-foot carry down stairs to a sandy beach, so light gear is recommended.

⚠️ Notes

Hoel Pond can develop large waves in windy conditions, and boaters should be prepared for open-water conditions despite its pond classification.
