Owned and operated by Historic Saranac Lake, the Saranac Laboratory Museum offers a fascinating look into the village’s remarkable past as a center for tuberculosis treatment. Housed in the historic laboratory building, the museum brings this important chapter of history to life through engaging exhibits that explore local history, scientific advancements, and patient care during the era when Saranac Lake became known as a healing destination. Visitors can also enjoy rotating special exhibits that highlight different aspects of the region’s heritage, ensuring there is always something new to discover.
The museum features a thoughtfully curated gift shop with books and unique items focused on local history, making it easy to take a piece of the story home.
Beyond the museum, the organization offers guided tours throughout the summer and limited tours by appointment in the off-season, as well as access to the Bartok Cabin, where composer Béla Bartók spent the final summer of his life. Visitors can also explore an extensive online archive of over 6,000 pages through the Saranac Lake Historic Wiki, extending the experience well beyond the museum walls.
